Advocacy
Advocacy is a skill that develops over time
I’ve been immersed in this area since joining the British Embassy in Bucharest in 2004.
Successful advocacy is built on the same foundational skills required for diplomacy: a deep understanding of your stakeholders’ values, the ability to create a sense of community, and, of course, plenty of tact.
One of my favourite diplomatic sayings is “Never say never.” It’s a phrase that’s often overused, but for good reason – it’s proven its value time and again. Another term I enjoy is “suboptimal,” which is a more diplomatic way of saying, “something’s not working.”
Cynics may say diplomats spend most of their time reading newspapers – or, in today’s world, browsing social media – and eating Ferrero Rocher chocolates. For those not familiar with soft power tools, let me assure you, they both work.
With this in mind, we will work together to assess your needs, identify opportunities for stakeholder engagement, and plan for long-term relationship-building.
In advocacy, results are rarely immediate. Regular progress assessments are essential, and educated patience becomes an invaluable asset. Be prepared for plenty of contact-building, stakeholder engagement, and the occasional late evening.
